{"id":800,"date":"2019-11-27T23:57:26","date_gmt":"2019-11-27T23:57:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/michellebrodie.com\/?page_id=800"},"modified":"2019-11-28T00:24:12","modified_gmt":"2019-11-28T00:24:12","slug":"oak-woodland-ramble","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/michellebrodie.com\/?page_id=800","title":{"rendered":"Oak Woodland Ramble"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Oak Woodland Ramble<br \/>By Michelle Brodie<br \/>January 14, 2016<\/p>\n<p>September ushers in the fall<\/p>\n<p>And a time for gathering acorns<\/p>\n<p>Competing with the Black-tailed Deer, Western Gray Squirrel, and many creatures great and small<\/p>\n<p>Here where the Paiute, Miwok, and Volvon once stood<\/p>\n<p>It was acorns they collected<\/p>\n<p>But time passed them by and their ways are no longer respected<\/p>\n<p>Vast herds of bison once roamed the endless prairies<\/p>\n<p>Now just wheat and corn fields and dairies<\/p>\n<p>Deer, Squirrel, Miwok, Volvon hold vast reservoirs of knowledge<\/p>\n<p>Protein and Omega 6 fatty acids of the acorn make it vastly superior to wheat and this they knew without going to college<\/p>\n<p>September is a time for an Oak Woodland Ramble<\/p>\n<p>Searching for the acorn of the California Black Oak is where we aim to amble<\/p>\n<p>The Western Gray Squirrel has become my nemesis<\/p>\n<p>Wait too late in fall and you&#8217;ll only find ones he has missed<\/p>\n<p>Scampering away while being strafed by the Scrub Jay &amp; Acorn Woodpecker, both intent on storing their loot<\/p>\n<p>In holes, in trees, and buried in the ground<\/p>\n<p>Anywhere away from the crush of the human boot<\/p>\n<p>Discarding the ones with fungus or small holes;
